A ballot initiative that would make recreational cannabis use lawful in Oregon has earned enough signatures to secure a place on the state's November ballot, meaning voters will soon decide whether to make Oregon the country's third state with legalized weed.

If voted in, the new rules would allow Oregonians to possess up to eight ounces of bud and grow four of their own plants, Salem, Oregon's Statesman Journal reports. Sales would begin January 2016, with pot taxed at $1.50 a gram or $35 an ounce.

Earlier this month, a pro-pot group submitted a 55,000-signature petition for a ballot initiative in D.C., and legalization will appear on Alaska's November ballots as well.

A similar effort to legalize pot in Oregon was voted down in 2012. According to the Statesman Journal, the leaders of New Approach Oregon, the group that pushed the current initiative, say they've learned from the mistakes of that campaign, and promise a "sober" approach to pot this year.
