In a scenario ripped from some Republican nightmare vision of Obama's America, the city of Berkeley, California will soon require cannabis dispensaries to give away free weed to low-income medical marijuana patients.

A proposal unanimously passed by Berkley's city council this week calls on outlets to give two percent of the amount of cannabis they sell to those couldn't otherwise afford it, CBS reports. And to keep less fortunate Berkeleyites from getting stiffed with dirt weed, whatever product dispensaries hand out must be of equal quality to what they sell to paying customers.

"Basically, the city council wants to make sure that low-income, homeless, indigent folks have access to their medical marijuana, their medicine," Berkeley City Councilmember Darryl Moore said, adding, "We think this is the responsible thing to do for those less fortunate in our community."

One of the city's pot-peddlers has been distributing to the poor on its own volition for years. From CBS:

"We've found out over the years that one of the cruel realities is that when you do get sick and you have a serious illness is that it's often hard to keep a job, can be hard to keep your income up, so those people really need the help the most," said Sean Luse of Berkeley Patients Group.

The new rules will also allow the number of Berkeley dispensaries to expand to four.
